Laguardia community college ( America in the World: 2010)

1) In Lucy Jamaica Kincaid describes Lucy's impressions on first arriving in the United States. What kind of things does she notice? How would you describe her first impressions of the U.S.? How does this compare to other immigration stories that you've heard or read?

(1)When Lucy first comes to America she realized that America is a lot different from where she came from. It was her dream to come to America she use to think this is where dreams come to reality. When she arrived here she began to see things differently. She felt lonely. She felt disrespected and disappointed by people. She missed her family and the way she use to be treated very special in her own country. She use to feel more meaningful within her own people, her parents, her friends, and other people she grew up knowing from where she use to live. She also mentioned that homes here in America is a lot different from the homes she use to live in , here she described that room where she was sleeping in, the ceiling was high and the walls reached all the way up to the ceiling. According to her description I would say that the place she is from is a very tropical place where people made homes that looks like huts, and for someone to come from a place like that to America it’s a big change for them. People from all over the world comes to America for better life, sometimes when they arrive here they realize that America is not really like how they imagined it would be like, people comes here they work really really hard to get their self a better life and their better life becomes inspirations to other people Around the world to come to America, and when they come here they end up experiencing similar things Lucy had experienced when she first came to USA. What’s great about USA is that you are given chance to make your dreams in to reality and ours rights of making those dreams into reality and that is what makes life here  in America so free.

  1. Nice reflections - think about how you can make them more specific by referring to details from the reading.
